HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME at Bailiwick Repertory

David G. Zak – Chicago Stage Director & LGBTQ+ Theater Advocate

Education:
David Zak’s passion for the stage began with his studies at MacMurray College (1973–1977), which laid the foundation for a prolific career in theater.


Bailiwick Repertory Theatre (1982–2009):
In 1982, Zak became the artistic director of Chicago’s vital LGBTQ+ theater, Bailiwick Repertory. Over 27 years, he championed works by and for the queer community, directing world and Chicago premieres such as Jerry Springer—The Opera, Animal Farm, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Christmas Schooner. His mentorship nurtured countless LGBTQ+ playwrights, actors, and new works during the iconic annual Pride Series.


Awards & Recognition:

Zak’s excellence earned him seven Joseph Jefferson Awards, including four for directing (Animal Farm, Dr. Sex, Parade, Pope Joan) and two for writing (The Hiroshima Project, The Count of Monte Cristo), plus a special citation for fostering diversity in Chicago theater. Chicago Magazine listed him among the city's 50 most influential theater figures.


International Work & Productions:

His directing credits extend nationally and internationally—from Boston (Sin: A Cardinal Deposed), Los Angeles (Dr. Sex), and New York (Marlowe) to Seoul (Dollhouse), London (The Irish Curse), Dublin (His Greatness, At The Flash), New York (Marlowe, Poseidon:  An Upside Down Musical) and more.


Pride Films & Plays (2012–2020):

Zak founded and led Pride Films & Plays in 2012, continuing his mission to amplify queer voices on the Chicago stage. Notable productions include A Man of No Importance (Jeff-nominated, 2019), Under a Rainbow Flag, and several world premieres presented at Open Space Arts.


Queer Expression & Open Space Arts:

Currently based in Uptown Chicago, Zak is the director of the “Queer Expression” film and theater festival series at Open Space Arts. H


LGBTQ+ Community Impact:
Honored in 2013 by induction into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame, Zak was recognized for his unwavering dedication to uplifting queer arts and advancing social equality through theater.


Continuing Influence:
Zak remains a creative force in Chicago’s theater community—leading festivals, mentoring emerging artists, and directing for Open Space Arts, Beverly Theater Center, and Others. 


Community Involvement:

He also serves as board president of Chicago PrimeTimers, a social organization for older gay, bi, and trans men, where he helps foster connection, visibility, and community engagement across generations.
